HEALTH & WELLNESS

Health & Wellness is a vital component of a successful individual and a thriving community. The 100 focuses on the well-being of the whole person: physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual through initiatives that: 1) raise awareness of health disparities and solutions; and 2) provide access to health care and wellness information that promote behavioral changes that result in healthier lifestyles, good nutrition, regular physical activity, and full ownership of one’s health. At the national and local level, our organization and Chapter affiliates partner with corporations, foundations, and other nonprofit organizations to promote preventative health strategies and provide education on prevalent diseases that negatively impact African Americans. Through these partnerships, The 100 delivers health education programs in hundreds of communities annually. Healthy children can become healthy adults; and healthy adults contribute to the overall health of our communities.

CHAAMPS

The Center for Healthy African American Men through Partnerships (CHAAMPS) is a consortium of regional academic centers and community organizations, is a first-ever collaborative center to develop, implement and evaluate interventions to improve African American men’s health through research, outreach, and training. We partner with CHAAMPS to focus on raising awareness and providing access to information and tools to improve health outcomes in critical areas that negatively impact African Americans.  These focus areas include, but are not limited to, child health/fitness, prostate, colorectal, breast and lung cancers, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, mental/behavioral health, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, and violence prevention.

FRUIT & VEGETABLE DISTRIBUTION

Through our partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield, we sponsored a fruit and vegetable health and wellness program where 4th and 5th-grade students at Washington Elementary School (2009 – 2011) and Stephens Elementary School (Jan – May 2012) received fruit and vegetables along with education on the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Along with healthy snacks, students also receive education from chapter members on the importance of daily exercise.
